Brookwood leadership wants to stand on the position that they did nothing wrong and everything right. But the actual history tells a very different story.

The Multi-Decade Timeline: Jerry Sidell arrived and started attending Brookwood back in 1999—during founding pastor Perry Duggar’s tenure—and church leadership has publicly confirmed they knew about his 1983 child molestation convictions from day one. When Pastor Bryan Jones took over in 2023, that silence continued straight through to the present. Under neither administration was the congregation ever publicly told they had a convicted child molester among them. Sidell was convicted of sexually assaulting two boys—he admitted to nine. This spans more than two decades across different leadership.

The Real Catalyst for Removal: Sidell’s removal only happened after the Pawleys Island situation came to light. But make no mistake about the motivation: the two churches aren’t connected, and leadership didn’t suddenly grow a conscience or decide to prioritize safety. In my view, they panicked because Pawleys was exposed as having the exact same dangerous reality—a church hiding a registered sex offender’s access to children—and they rushed to dump Sidell purely to cover their own asses before that identical secret blew up.

The Real Focus on the “Leak”: Clearly, information was leaked from inside Brookwood to instigate their exposure. Behind the scenes, leadership’s primary frustration hasn’t been accountability or remorse toward the congregation—it has been intense anger over the fact that internal church communications got “leaked.” Think about that for a minute—you only get that furious about a “leak” when your entire strategy relied on keeping the situation hidden from the people who trusted you.

You cannot manage, enable, and quietly shelter a convicted sex offender for nearly three decades, throw a fit when the secret gets out, and then hide behind vague corporate statements while keeping the congregation in the dark.

When a church hits a major scandal, the script is usually the same. They want you to think everything was handled carefully behind closed doors and that safety has always been priority number one. But when you look behind the scenes—especially through the eyes of an insider like David Walsh—the real goal is almost always protecting the church’s image.

Take what’s been happening at Brookwood Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina. In the days since the story broke, people have been trying to figure out how Jerry Sidell—who was convicted of child molestation in Georgia back in 1983—managed to stay active in the music and adult group ministries for years. Leadership’s defense has basically boiled down to: Relax, we knew about it and kept an eye on it.

Except, as David—who served as a men’s group and co-ed group leader there—can tell you firsthand, that story doesn’t hold up. He saw how leadership operated from the inside: they handled serious safety details like exclusive inside info, keeping everyday parents and families completely in the dark while acting like they had everything under control.

    The Real Trigger: Pure Panic

And here is the most revealing part about why Sidell was finally shown the door. It wasn’t because leadership suddenly decided to do the right thing out of the blue. It was pure panic.

A massive scandal blew up down on the coast at Pawleys Island Community Church—roughly a three-to-four-hour drive east of Simpsonville. For Brookwood’s Senior Pastor, Bryan Jones, Pawleys Island is where he vacations regularly and where his family members are involved at Pawleys Island Community Church. When the chaos started down on the coast, those family members even asked if Brookwood pastors could head down to help fill in.

Think about the staggering irony of that moment: while family members down in Pawleys were dealing with a crisis on the coast and asking for reinforcement, Brookwood leadership back home in Simpsonville was sitting on a ticking time bomb in their own backyard.

When a massive scandal hit the very coastal town where Bryan Jones spends his holidays, the
